Democracy is Not a Spectator Sport
Author: Rod Fisher, Chair, DFL SD49
I have some progressive and liberal friends who are currently sitting out because they view partisan politics as unsavory and somehow dirty. Political parties are the problem, they say, not the solution, and they don't want to get into that fight.
Well......
At what point, I ask, are they willing to let the other side win? Pacifism is nice, I guess, until the guns and pitchforks are at your door and coming for your family.
There's a battle going on right now, right here in our state and certainly in our country, to decide who gets to vote, who gets to decide your reproductive rights, who gets to choose if your religion or ethnicity is acceptable.
I decided to join the fight in 2017, when it became clear that the GOP had accepted Trump and MAGA as their brand and their vision.
I'm proud to be in this partisan fight. Is my party, the DFL, perfect? Nope. But we hold certain truths to be self-evident, and they are important, and I'm going to fight for those truths.
I hope my friends who are sitting on the bench decide to step onto the field and join the struggle. Come to one of our meetups, volunteer and vote for candidates on the local and national level, and help us get out the vote for November. Your voice and your vote matters, and we need you.
